Good job writing up the DIY, I'm sure it will be helpful to many mk3 owners who suffer the strange problems the ignition switch can cause (its not always as simple as the car wont start, mine would actually keep the fuel pump etc on and would drain the battery). It's all pretty straightforward, connecting up that U-joint was the only thing I found difficul when I did mine a while back, it took a lot of swearing and stretching the body in unnatural ways, but eventually I got it back togethor, although I don't think I got it aligned properly. Ohwell.

BTW, not trying to hijack the thread but thought this might be useful for anyone with a broken ignition switch... if anyone wants to buy an ignition switch, I have a spare so pm me Ordered one from GAP but then decided I needed one pretty urgently so got one from the dealer and put that in, a week or two later the one from GAP arrived and has just been sitting around since so I'm happy to sell it for what I paid for it, which is much less than the local dealers want for them
